Parent University
MCS administers Parent University as a supplement to the Parents as Partners program. At Parent University, a group of parents come together to discuss the systemic issues in the public school system that affect the academic achievement of their children. After several participatory sessions, on such topics as public education and academic performance, parents identify issues that have priority. In the past, they have listed ineffective communication between schools and parents, including lack of timely notice of supplemental services; school safety; assistance in understanding and following the road to college; and the lack of counseling services that support, inform, and prepare youth for college.
In addition to supplemental learning
classes, DC PIRC works with school to host
community resource fairs, bringing neighborhood
agencies and services to local schools so that
parents know about available local
programs.
