Parent Involvement

DC Parent Information Resource Center (DC PIRC) is the only one-stop shop in Washington DC working in the area of parent involvement in education. DC PIRC is part of a national network of 60 statewide PIRCs across the United States, federally funded under Title V of the No Child Left Behind Act. PIRCs across the nation work hand in hand with state and federal programs to provide information and identify resources on the subject of parent involvement from early childhood through high school.

Language Services

In Washington DC's highly diverse communities, where over 125 native languages and dialects are spoken, there is a critical need for interpretation and translation services. MCS's Language Services Program seeks to fill that need by providing interpretation and translation services in 19 languages in the community. Community interpretation provides access to services for residents who may be isolated because of language. Such services can include medical care, social benefits, and participation in their children's education.

Youth PeaceMakers

Washington DC youth face a number of challenges common to youth in America's inner cities, including family poverty, a sense of lack of opportunity or belief in their own ability to succeed, and exposure to violence, drugs and gang activity. The key to success for these at-risk youth is an understanding that they can succeed academically, economically, and in their envisioned life. MCS strongly believes that such an understanding comes through personal growth; connection and belonging to their community; support and encouragement from a caring network; and a clear vision of the pathways that can lead to success, such as a renewed commitment to academic achievement and focus on attaining basic skills.

Facilitation and Mediation

MCS's formidable expertise in facilitation and mediation is an integral part of all MCS programs. It is a critical element for implementing deep processes (such as study circles and peace games) and sustained dialogue, which is what engenders unity among divided groups of people. Sustained dialogue and deep process conversation cultivate viable and sustainable community solutions to problems because of the understanding and respect that emerges in people who talk to one another. MCS also makes facilitation and mediation services available to the community to help resolve community problems that surface and threaten to escalate into conflict.
