DC PIRC and Educators
DC PIRC helps educators and schools create effective vehicles for parent involvement by building school staff capacity to train parents and involve them in the education of their children. By facilitating the collective work of educators, parents, and community members, DC PIRC expects to increase student academic achievement in Washington DC.
DC PIRC supports educators and other professionals, as well as interested organizations by:
- Offering training on effective parent-school collaboration
- Connecting schools to literacy resources
- Disseminating information on No Child Left Behind requirements
- Conducting outreach and communication in multiple languages
- Holding workshops and presentations on family involvement policies
- Providing education and consultation on effective parent practices
- Organizing community forums on parent involvement benefits and opportunities
DC PIRC offers professional development workshops for school staff and principals on:
- Communicating effectively with parents
- Title I and Lead Education Agency (LEA) requirements for parent involvement
- Consulting parents in school planning and improvement
- Conducting a needs assessment of parents
- Creating school-based parent centers
- Sharing best practices
School-Based Parent Centers: DC PIRC staff members, with parents and school personnel, are working to design model parent centers in Wards 1, 7 and 8.
School Walkthrough: DC PIRC staff and school members evaluate the welcoming atmosphere of individual schools and recommend ways to improve this atmosphere.
District of Columbia Parent Education Expo (DC FEE): the DC PIRC led the organization of this citywide conference in partnership with over 40 agencies and organizations to promote parental involvement through dissemination of information about educational programs.
Publications: DC PIRC acts as an information clearinghouse for educators. DC PIRC maintains in stock and distributes a variety of publications addressing such topics as parent involvement, literacy, children's development, school choice, and No Child Left Behind, among others.
